Steering Your Life With Your Tongue

Last week we talked about how words create, how God formed the world by speaking, and how our faith is released the same way: through what we say.
But there’s another layer Scripture reveals:
Words don’t just create.
They steer.
Life and Death Are in Your Mouth
Proverbs 18:21 says:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”
That’s not poetic language. That’s spiritual law.
Our words consistently move us in one of two directions:
toward life
or toward limitation
Toward hope or toward heaviness
Toward faith or toward fear
The Heart and Tongue Connection
Jesus explained it plainly:
“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34)
Your mouth is not the problem. It’s the messenger.
Your words reveal what your heart has been storing. If your heart is filled with God’s promises, courage comes out.
If your heart is filled with anxiety, fear comes out.
If your heart is filled with bitterness, criticism comes out.
The tongue simply gives voice to the heart’s content.
The Rudder Principle
James gives one of the most powerful illustrations in the Bible:
A massive ship…
Moved by strong winds…
Directed by a very small rudder.
Then he says the tongue works the same way.
Such a small thing. Yet it determines direction. You may not control every storm. You may not control every circumstance.
But you do control the rudder. You control what you say.
And what you say quietly determines where you end up.
How Do We Control the Tongue?
Not by willpower.
But by feeding the heart.
Whatever you consistently feed your spirit will eventually shape your thoughts.
Your thoughts become your beliefs.
Your beliefs become your words.
Your words become your direction. That’s why Scripture urges us to renew our minds and meditate on God’s Word. So here’s a simple but powerful practice: Think about what you’re thinking about.
If your thoughts are filled with God’s Word, your mouth will eventually speak God’s Word. And when God’s Word becomes your language, faith becomes your steering wheel.
Speak What You Want to Grow
You don’t have to be loud.
You don’t have to be dramatic.
You just have to be consistent.
Speak peace.
Speak strength.
Speak healing.
Speak wisdom.
Speak God’s promises.
Your life will begin to follow your voice.
