Clean Heart, Clear Connection

“Create in me a clean heart, O God…” is more than a beautiful scripture; it’s a daily necessity.

I’ve learned I can’t do life without God. I need His presence like I need air. My time with Him steadies me, centers me, and reminds me who I am when everything around me is loud. If I’m honest: He’s my lifeline, my complete dependence. When I don’t drink from Him, I start reaching for everything else to soothe what only He can satisfy.

But here’s the other truth: I can love God deeply and still have junk in my heart. Offenses can lodge themselves in quiet places like resentment, bitterness, the replay of a conversation, the ache of someone’s betrayal. And scripture is clear that an unforgiving heart blocks our connection. That’s why I have to do a heart check often… sometimes daily. Not because I’m trying to be “perfect,” but because I’m trying to stay clean and I need God to survive. I can’t afford spiritual static.

And forgiveness? Whew. Forgiveness is not always a moment, it’s often a process. Sometimes I choose to forgive, but the sting is still there. The memory still bites. The wound still talks. And that’s when I’ve learned forgiveness looks a lot like faith: I confess it before I feel it. I declare what God is forming in me, even when my emotions haven’t caught up yet. “Lord, I forgive them” becomes my offering again and again until my heart catches up with my mouth. Because I want a clean heart, a clear connection, and a life that stays close enough to God to hear Him… and be heard by Him.
