An Excellent Heart Leaves a Trail

The older I get, the more I recognize how rare and how powerful excellence really is. I notice it most in customer service: the person who’s attentive and thorough without making you feel like a task. And when I receive that kind of care, I tip generously because excellence deserves honor. It’s a heart posture that says, “You matter,” even in the smallest moment.
This isn’t just about what I appreciate from others, it’s about what I want to give. Excellence isn’t perfection; it’s intention. It’s an excellent mind that doesn’t coast. It’s showing up with care in the “little things” like how I prepare a meal for someone, how I speak and listen, how I handle details when no one is watching. It’s looking people in the eye and being fully present. It’s not throwing life together, but living with a spirit that says, “I’m going to do this well because my heart is well.”
And for me, excellence flows from who lives in my heart. If Jesus is in me, then excellence isn’t just a work ethic, it’s worship. I’m not aiming to be impressive; I’m aiming to be faithful. Because what I sow eventually returns. If I sow excellence, I’m planting a standard that has a way of coming back around through relationships, opportunities, favor, and the quality of my own life.
So here’s the question I’m sitting with this week:
What would change if I treated every assignment, every conversation, and every “small moment” as sacred and worthy of my very best?
